Fishing tactics for various venues around the West Midlands

Woods farm fishery, Shirley. With the fishing school based here, what better place to start. Main pool. On the right hand side as you enter the fishery, we have a 32 peg match lake, which holds 2 islands, the first one can be reached with between 13 and 16 metre poles. The second at the far end of the lake is between 7 and 13 metres. This is a mixed fishery, with a good head of roach, crucian carp, tench and larger carp. You never know what you are going to catch next. Tactics for this lake vary from day to day the Thursday evening matches on this pool can be won with a netful of roach and crucians or cat food caught larger carp, normally in access of 45lbs. Best baits! Sweet corn, louncheon meat, cat food, maggot, caster and if if its warm floating bread. Pine pool. This being a smaller pool with a good head of small fish, again crusians and roach feature here. This is why most of the angling school activities are held on this pool. Very rarely do we hold any matches on this pool. But if we did, i would imagine that it would be won with inexcess of 30lbs of maggot caught fish. Bridge pool. This being the smallest lake on the fishery and spring fed. you can fish on this pool at anytime, due to the clarity of this pool it needs to be fished with very light lines and small hooks. Their is a very good head of fish but very rarely do we see anybody fishing on here. It does hold some monster carp and a good head of smaller fish. Do not be fooled by this little pool it runs to 12 foot deep in parts Best baits on this pool are liquidized bread and bread punch fished on the hook. Maggots Casters and sweetcorn also catch well. Flight match pool. This pool is only booked for matches or private sessions, due to being harder to reach. Last year the flight pool was  re-vamped with new permanant pegs and an extention to hold 35 pegs and a re-stocking plan. This still holds a good head of the old stock with carp running to double figures. With the new mixed fish from 1oz to about 2lbs. The first match we held saw 2 weights over 50lbs. Best baits. Large carp, cat food, sweet corn and louncheon meat, all other species maggot, caster, and at times bread. Their is a fishery ban on all ground baits, pellets and boilies.

Earlswood lakes
The infamous Engine lake at Earlswood has seen a big change in tactics this year. Match tactics see nothing but pellet waggler fished with 10mm halibut pellets, feeding as often as possible 4 -6 pellets at a time (4-6 kilo is needed for an average match). The average match winning weights at the moment are 150lbs. Pleasure anglers are still managing to bag 1 or 2 carp with the method feeder but most are trying the pellet waggler. A few anglers still fish with a pole but this is not advised by myself as the fish fight like no others and pole breakages are regular. Paste is not working yet. With the average carp now standing at over 10lbs this is not a place for the light hearted. The yachting lake. This lake is still a good silver fish and predator lake. Good bags of bream can be caught on the cage feeder with chopped worm. For the roach Pole and caster is the normal with the waggler coming in if the wind picks up. As for pike fishing most anglers prefer to fish with lures and walk round to locate feeding fish, bait anglers tend to fish the dam wall or between the weed beds on the causeway. The biggest pike caught this year was 24lbs.

Blythe waters, Knowle
This in my opinion should be the premier fiahery of British waterways. It offers the coarse fisherman just about everything a fishery can offer. From the Home pool which is stocked with specimen carp to over 30lbs. Right through match pools Bridge and Willow which both hold a massive head of fish with match weights normally well in access of 100lbs. Down to Cherries which again is well stocked with both carp and silvers and down to the kingfisher pool, which is aimed at the beginner stocked with smaller fish that are moved into the other lakes once they reach adulthood. Their is also a fully equiped cafe were food and drink are available all day long.

Packington Somers

With 3 main match lakes and numerous pleasure fishing pools, The Packington somers complex, offers something for all. The main match lakes being Molands Mere which holds 60 pegs,  Gearys level 40 pegs and little Gearys 30 pegs. Also smaller lakes for club matches including Grats, siblings and willow. Then the specimen lake Anniversarys plus a 1 mile stretch of the river Blythe. This fishery offers every type of fishing you could ask for.
